Help Win $100K for Kauai Humane

We are getting ready to compete in the $100K SAVE MORE LIVES CHALLENGE sponsored by the ASPCA, August – October.  This is a chance for Kauai Humane to win $100k to help Kauai’s homeless and abused animals.

What we need to do is save 25 more animals a week minimum by either returning a lost pet home or adopting a homeless pet into a new home.  Over 80% of pets received at the shelter are lost and belong to someone?  We are open daily to come search for your pet or maybe find a new pet.

Please help us spread the word!

Mahalo from all of us at Kauai Humane

Thrift Shop Needs Your Help

During these hard economic times, our thrift shop is needed more than ever.  We have an urgent need for more volunteers to keep our store hours open.  The shop helps both the community and the animals.  Please, if you have some time available, go visit with Adria, the shop manager or call 245-7387.  Volunteers help stock shelves, cashier, assist customers, keep the store clean and organized, and whatever else is needed.  We need your help now.  Our thrift shop funding is critical for services we provide to the community and is a great place to shop for the best deals in town.  Please consider our thrift shop first when donating your used clothing or household goods.  Mahalo for your support, Dr. Becky

Overflowing with cats and kittens

June begins our annual Love A Cat month to bring awareness to the severe overpopulation of cats on Kauai.  During June we will be offering two cats for one adoption fee, $50.  We have a wide variety of both kittens and adult cats available daily at the shelter.  If you aren’t in a situation to adopt a new feline friend, maybe consider helping us care for them as a volunteer.  Also, we are continueing our mobile pay/neuter service for cats to help prevent more homeless kittens.  Next stop is Wednesday, June 24th in Kapaia.  Call us at 632-0610 for information on how you can help Kauai’s cats.

The SCOOP on WOOFSTOCK 2009

BACKROUND:  Annual Dinner & Silent Auction benefit for the Kauai Humane Society pet adoption programs.  Our only fundraiser of the year.Kauai Humane Society is Kauai’s go to place regarding animals if you need help, have questions, want an issue resolved, or just need to sit and feel the love of animals.  And of course, we serve as Kauai’s only pet lost and found center, offer low cost spay/neuter and ID services, education about animals for all ages, and the coolest place on island to find a new friend.   Over 1000 homeless pets find new homes and over 800 lost pets are reunited with their families every year at KHS. The County Council is seriously considering adopting the Mayor’s proposed budget which would decrease our contract amount by a whopping 10%.  Each year, we operate the animal management contract for the County at a deficit and we can’t afford an even greater deficit.  We do not belong to any mainland or Hawaii organizations and we don’t receive funds from any of them, the State or Federal government.  More than ever, we need a successful fundraiser this year.  Every dollar raised stays on Kauai to help our community.  THE EVENT:  WOOFSTOCK 2009, Saturday May 9th, 6:00pm at Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club, Kalapaki  Individual tickets for $85 on sale at the shelter and thrift store in Lihue.  Table sponsorships for $1500 and $5000 will be accepted up to May 1 for inclusion in program and recognition. The theme is based on Woodstock in 1969.  We are suggesting guests dress from the era to join us on the dance floor after dinnerJ. This year we partnered with Kauai nonprofit, Malama Pono for our entertainment – so both organizations could benefit.  Malama Pono produced our 60-70’s rock’nroll dance band:  The Yes Men with special guest Dolly Kanekuni.  Sound provided by The Soundman.  We are setting up a dance floor for all of us to rock out to after dinner.  The stage set has been created and built by Ron Horoshko.  We guarantee the best party on Kauai!

VOLUNTEERS:  We also created a new team of volunteers called the Golden Retrievers (retrieving the gold for KHS) to work on the silent auction, sell tickets, etc.  Great group led by Paul Kraselsky from Koloa who have custom designed and made unique fun centerpieces which Paul donated all supplies for.  The have been working hard to gather donations for our auction.  Big Mahalo to Paul and his Koloa Estate neighbors and friends: Kathy Lawson, Maurene Holt, Linda Jackson, Dani Kroll, and Shirley Ide as well as our other great volunteers helping this year!

SOUNDS OF SILENCE AUCTION:  We have a fabulous silent auction developing – highlights include the handmade seascape quilt created by No Nene quilters, an electric bicycle, trip to Vegas, local get-a-ways, golf, dining, fine art, jewelry, pet care services, variety of gift certificates for local services, Gourmet dinner for 10 in Freddie’s Dog Park with Mexican chef- Juan Ramirez, all kinds of wine including a case of Chalk Hill 2003 Cabernet Sauvigon, etc.  presented in baskets with pawprint wine glasses and limited edition of ceramic tiles with this year’s logo made by Banana Patch Studios.  We are also offering for sale a limited number of tiles from past years which people have been asking for. 2009 MAHALO AWARDS to community members who have done extraordinary things to help Kauai’s animals and KHS – see below:1.       Linda Russell for her many years of volunteer service leading and building our volunteer program to help Kauai’s animals in need.2.       Roy Constantino, for always being there to assist us with the rescue of stranded and injured animals on the Pali of Kauai.3.       Sue Hansen for her dedication and leadership advocating for responsible dog walking on the Kauai Coastal Path.
